The eBay Diaries - Part One: Getting Started
I first published my interview with Janiece
Smith of Express Profits Online in January 2005. I’d
always dabbled in online auctions and eBay and love both buying
and selling, so the information I’d gleaned from reviewing
her book and the interview stayed in the back of my brain.
My retail experience consisted of lemonade
stands as a kid and a brief and forgettable stint as a stock counter.
But the more I looked
at eBay, the more I thought – why not me too?
I decided to shed my amateur status in October
last year. Following the advice in Janiece's book, I talked with
my accountant and the tax office here in Australia to make sure I
was
set up
properly to take in and
pay out sales tax. My husband helped me brainstorm names and we researched
them on a government web site.
Then I registered my name with our state government and set up a
bank account for the business. Homeware Haven was born!
I grabbed the domain name and set up a small hosting account so
that I could have an email account related to my business name. My
hubby re-sells hosting, so I got a pretty good deal. ; ^ )
I decided that initially I only
wanted to sell domestically – as international selling involves
layers of complexity in terms of postage and customs that I just
didn’t have the time or energy to learn.
